He compares it to the invention of the Internet.. Bill Gates praises "gpt chat" and intelligence friends
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, believes that the artificial intelligence program "ChatGPT" is just as important as the invention of the internet, as he told the German daily newspaper Handelsblatt in an interview published today.
"Until now, artificial intelligence has been able to read and write, but it hasn't been able to understand content," Gates said in his comment. "New programs like ChatGPT will make many office jobs more efficient by helping to write bills or messages, and this will change our world."
ChatGPT is a conversational robot that provides human-like responses to user inquiries and was developed by the American company OpenAI with support from Microsoft. It has been rated as the fastest growing consumer application in history.
Gates also added that he expects many new entrants to the artificial intelligence field, saying, "In reality, part of the excitement is that there will be many newcomers to this field, but what OpenAI has done is impressive."
"Will artificial intelligence steal our jobs?"
Gates said that routine jobs will definitely be among the first jobs to be impacted by artificial intelligence, ( the lawyer robot ) but more slowly than expected. A change will occur, similar to what happened with factory robots in the next 5 to 10 years, but the self-driving business machines will face challenges and will take some time to resolve.
What impresses Gates most about artificial intelligence is the ability of large language models to read and write. He said "Summarizing a complex set of documents or writing something in a well-known writer's style is a fascinating thing."
He added that he often turns to "Chat GPT" for creative work. "When you're with a group of friends and want to write a poem about how much fun something is, all you have to do is say: write it like Shakespeare, and the robot will do it easily."
Microsoft was one of the early investors in OpenAI, and recently announced investments in billions of dollars to enhance its software development.
Gates, who left the Microsoft board in 2020, still devotes about 10% of his time to the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, to meet with its teams.
